Mould and rot

Mould and rot occur in humid environments, and can result in significant damage to buildings, materials and wood products. They also represent a significant health risk for any staff, visitors or other people using the facility affected by these problems..

If the relative humidity exceeds 70%, there is a significant risk of mould and mildew being present and growing.

Temperature differences

Humidity problems often arise when warm air (such as air from a heated room) undergoes cooling – as the result of contact with a cold wall, for example. This can give rise to condensation, which in turn creates ideal conditions for mould and mildew to form.

There are particularly high risks of mould and mildew – and subsequent rot – occurring on or near:

  • Cold walls
  • Outer walls
  • Thermal bridges

Managing the water content of wood

Wood is a hygroscopic material that can absorb water. High levels of moisture in the air – humidity – increase the water content of the wood, which in turn can lead to rot.

Installation of appropriate adsorption dehumidification equipment makes it possible to lower the humidity in the air and thus prevent mould and rot issues from arising.
